Gutter cleaning is the least glamorous maintenance a house needs — and skipping it causes some of the most expensive damage we see: rotted fascia, stained siding, ice dams, and water in the basement. Here's the schedule that actually protects a New Jersey home.

The baseline: twice a year

For most NJ homes, two cleanings cover it:

  • Late fall (November): the most important one — after the oaks and maples finish dropping, before the first hard freeze locks wet leaves into an ice plug.
  • Late spring (May–June): clears maple seeds, oak tassels, blossom debris and whatever winter storms deposited.

When twice isn't enough

  • Heavy tree cover: homes under mature oaks or pines often need a third (even fourth) pass — pine needles in particular mat into a waterproof layer.
  • After major storms: a nor'easter can fill a clean gutter in one afternoon.
  • Flat or low-slope roof sections: debris washes off them into gutters constantly.

The signs you've waited too long

  • Water sheeting over the gutter edge during rain
  • Plants literally growing in the gutter
  • Sagging sections — wet debris is heavy, and it pulls hangers loose
  • Ice dams at the roof edge in winter
  • Tiger-striping stains on the gutter face and siding below

What proper cleaning includes

A real cleaning isn't just scooping the visible run: it includes clearing the outlets, flushing every downspout to confirm water actually exits at the bottom, and a quick check of hangers and seams while up there. If the downspouts aren't flushed, the system may still be blocked where you can't see it.

Do gutter guards eliminate cleaning?

They reduce it substantially — from 2–4 cleanings a year to a light check every year or two — but no guard is truly “never clean again,” whatever the infomercial says. Fine debris still gets through and shingle granules accumulate. The honest pitch: guards change cleaning from a chore into an occasional check. If your home is under heavy trees, the math usually favors them.
